Urban Chicano
Protest Folk Love Songs and More
Victor Payan
Victor Payan is a writer,
humorist, poet and songwriter whose works combine the everyman quality
of 1930s dustbowl ballads with the immediacy of Mexican corridos and
a punk satirical sensibility. Never one to flinch from injustice, he
writes songs about migrant workers, political prisoners, globalization
and the spirit of popular revolution. He is also a gifted lyrical songwriter,
and his verses about love, loss and drinking are both catchy and well-crafted.
An original member of the Taco Shop Poets, Victor left the group to
pursue songwriting. He has since performed his urban Chicano folksongs
at taco shops, Mexican restaurants and performance spaces in San Diego,
San Ysidro, Los Angeles, Salinas, San Francisco, Berkeley, Austin, San
Antonio and other assorted small towns along the California freeway
system.
