Bio

Victor Payan is an award-winning writer, producer and conceptual artist who uses humor and satire to address issues of border culture and politics. His projects include the Keep on Crossin' movement and Aztec Gold with Lou Chalibre, an innovative cultural arts program hosted by a masked Mexican wrestler, which won the 2005 National Association of Latino Independent Producers' Latino Media Market.

His work has been featured in exhibitions, screenings and performances at the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego, Galeria de la Raza, The Esperanza Peace and Justice Center and the Museum of the Living Artist, among other institutions. In addition, he has participated as a panelist at conferences in the United States and Mexico.

His writing has been published in The Independent, The OC Weekly, San Diego City Beat, the San Diego Union-Tribune, El Aviso and the inaugural City Works Press anthology Sunshine/Noir. He was the principal writer/editor for the San Diego Latino Film Festival for twelve years and was a frequent contributor to Lalo Alcaraz's infamous news satire site, pocho.com.

Mr. Payan served as Associate Producer for the award winning PBS documentaries The U.S.-Mexican War: 1846-1848, The Border and Searching for San Diego: San Ysidro. He also directed and co-produced the documentary short Tijuana: La Esquina del Mundo (1999) and was the writer for the award-winning bilingual CD-ROM The Tijuana River Watershed (2003).

He was Event Coordinator for the 2003 and 2004 City Heights International Village Celebrations and co-produced the 2003 Keep on Crossin' Awards. He also coordinated the Chicano Urban Experience in Contemporary Rock and Folk Music series in 1994. An original member of the Taco Shop Poets, he is also creator of the Roots Rock Raza singer-songwriter series and the Everything's Aloud all-format open mic.
