Gregory Nava Signs New Line Deal
Director Set to Direct El Norte Sequel
by Victor Payan
Pocho Filmigration Expert
Hollywood heavyweight Gregory Nava has signed an exclusive two year motion
picture deal with New Line Cinema. In a statement issued yesterday, Nava
exclaimed that the first film he will direct will be a sequel to his groundbreaking
1983 film El Norte. the heartwrenching story of a Guatemalan brother
and sister who come to the magical north in search of a better life in
a country that will not exterminate them.
"I'm doing a sequel because the devastation caused by Hurricane Mitch
will send a new wave of Central Americans northward."
The sequel, which is set in modern day Los Angeles, will deal with how
Enrique, who will again be played by David Villalpando, is forced to migrate
further east because of the glut of new immigrants. The film, titled El
Monte, will also feature a return of the character Rosa, played by
Zaide Silvia Gutierrez. Although Rosa died at the end of El Norte,
she will be bionically resurrected in El Monte and serve as a kind
of Termi-nanny.
Nava feels that the timing for such a film is perfect.
"By the time the movie is released, the Latino population of the United
States will be much larger, thanks to the immigrants who are leaving Central
America now. And this means boffo bucks for the entertainment industry.
If Mojado won't come to the market, the market will come to Mojado. Let's
just hope they like popcorn."
El Norte is scheduled for national re-release later this year, at
the same time that El Monte will hit the theaters. This competition
with himself for the Latino entertainment dollar does not worry Nava.
"I think it's great that there will be two Nava films for the public
to choose from. If it's okay with Spielberg, hell, it's okay with me,"
says Nava. "Besides, I'm happy for the actors, as this would be the
first time in US film history that a Latino actor who is not Jimmy Smits
was in two movies at the same time."
